When you are out and about cycling it is important to get yourself geared up with decent accessories, from locks to mud guards I give my personal choices on the top 10 best cycle accessories.

10. Kryptonite Kryptoflex R2 Retractable Lock

Kryptonite lock

Kryptonite lock

This is a great bit of kit to have when you’re out on a bike ride, especially when taking that much needed coffee stop, it’s a great deterrent. The Kryptonite lock is ideal for when your bike is in close range, either locked to a fixed object or another bike, as it stops the passing opportunist to stroll off with your bike. Although a good pair of cutters would be required to break the cable, this is not a lock to leave your bike totally unattended. It’s also very handy when you need to leave your bike in transition areas in triathlons or similar events.

  • 4mm vinyl coated Steel retracting cable
  • Patented 4 – digit resettable combination lock
  • Dimensions 2.6cm
  • Cable length 90cm

  • Price £15.19

9. Garmin Varia RTL5 Bike Radar Tail Back Light

Garmin Varia RTL5 radar back light

Garmin Varia RTL5 radar back light

If you are out riding on your own or even a bit nervous about traffic, this is an amazing little gadget for you. The Garmin Varia RTL5 warns you of any traffic approaching from behind and it also has a very powerful rear light, extremely prominent in the daylight as well as at night, I was so impressed!

Recently, when I was in the States, I experienced a high volume of traffic during parts of my bike rides. We had to ride single file for safety also to not slow down the flow of traffic and cause motorists to get frustrated. The warning noise on the Garmin not only alerted myself of traffic approaching from behind, but also warned my friend who was cycling behind me.

A huge plus for me was surprisingly on country lanes. As you naturally are more relaxed and not expecting any company on backroads, the radar alert gives you that extra sense of awareness for any surprise cars approaching from behind. Especially for the silent electric cars & bikes!

  • Provides visual and audible alerts to warn of vehicles approaching from behind up to 153 yards (140 metres) away.
  • Tail light offers daylight visibility up to a mile away, so drivers can see you well before the radar sees the vehicle.
  • Sleek vertical design easily mounts to most road-use bicycles, including racing, touring and commuter styles.
  • Tail light provides 220 degrees of visibility to help improve driver awareness of your location.
  • Requires a dedicated radar display unit or wirelessly integrates with compatible Garmin devices.
  • USB chargeable.

8. Lezyne Control Drive Adaptor

Lezeyne control

Lezeyne control

With so many wheels now tubeless ready, you will need to get your tyres up to pressure after repairing your puncture. This lovely tool does it with ease, you simply screw the c02 canister onto control drive and turn the inflator head to release the air. Not only is it so much easier with co2, as opposed to using a mini pump, you can also control the flow of gas so as little or as much as you need. This particular Lezyne adaptor on Amazon doesn’t include the c02 canisters, but you get them separately.

Very good quality (Aluminium 25g) has adjustable function and compatible for Presta or Shradar.

  • Fits nicely in your pocket

7. Topeak ALiEN 11 26 Multi Tool

ALiEN Multi-tool

ALiEN Multi-tool

Everything you need when out on your bike, this award winning multi-tool has it all! With 26 functioning tools you will struggle to find a problem that this will not be able to fix. It’s so easy to use and luckily ALiEN have divided the tools into 2 separate pieces so it’s a lot easier to narrow down the tool you need.

One of the first things that attracted me to this was the nylon carry case, as if it’s placed in your pocket it will protect your jersey from snagging. Another lovely touch is the stainless steel parts which stop the tools rusting if always in your tool bag in damp conditions.

6. Bontrager ION 200 RT / Flare RT2 light set

Bontrager ION 200 RT / Flare RT2 light set

Bontrager ION 200 RT / Flare RT2 light set

These lights for their size are so bright. I couldn’t believe how good they were in the daylight. The front light provides up to 200 lumens of power for 1.5 hours, or up to 30 hours of light if used in flashing mode. The rear light will put out 90 lumens of flashing light for 6 hours or up to 30 hours in night time flash mode.

Like most lights out there, it uses a USB charger so can be charged easily. An added bonus is they have the ability to connect to Garmin and Bontrager ANT+ devices for battery status and wireless control, which helps prevents you from getting caught out in the dark. There is a battery save mode which kicks in at five percent power remaining to give an extra 30 minutes of light.

Mounting is easy as it’s on stretchy rubber rings which mean they will stretch to fit wide aero bar and seat posts.

This is such a great set of lights, easy to take on and off if traveling with your bike.

5. Castelli Ros Shoe Covers

Castelli Ros shoe covers

Castelli Ros shoe covers

These are just the job for the winter. They seem to be the best ones out there at the moment and at a great price too! I use these as they come up high, so less chance of the water getting in through the top of my shoes, with contoured seams and an internal gripper around the cuff. These overshoes are easy to pull on thanks to the textured grip pull. The reflection on the heel catches the car lights nicely and creates more awareness in the dark. Water-resistant inner splash zone with engineered seams to limit exposure to water and they do look good if wearing black leg warmers or tights. These boots are made well and will last a few seasons.

4. Castelli Gabba 3 Short Sleeves Jersey

Castelli jersey

Castelli jersey

A lovely Aerodynamic jersey hugely breathable and highly protective in all kinds of conditions. It’s really light weight with complete protection from the wind and a highly water-repellent finish. A great combination I find is to pair up with arm warmers and Gillet (if needed) so if the temperature goes up when you’re climbing you can remove your arm warmers or gilet to cool down, as opposed to being stuck with long sleeves.

Another key point is it doesn’t seem to get damp on the inside thanks to the fabric. It also comes in some great colours!

3. Ass Savers Regular Mudguard

Ass Savers Mud guard

Ass Savers Mud guard

Cheap as!! Great way to keep your bum dry…

These have been around for ages and come in all funky colours, the Ass Savers! Not like regular mudguards which can be a pain to fit and, of course, spoil the look of your bike. These are a simple design, absolutely no tools needed, and the FLIP-TIP effectively secures to the saddles rails and offers coverage for a variety of width of tyres from 23-35mm. A great cheap way to keep your kit from getting ruined!

2. Lizard Skin DSP Bar Tape 2.5mm

lizard skin tape

lizard skin tape

This tape is amazing. I’ve had it on my bike for 2 years, removed it twice and put it on again no problem, it went back on perfectly. Grippy with or without gloves, absorbs vibration and very durable, but it does come at a cost – it’s twice the price of normal tape but it is worth it!  It’s the best tape out there, easy to put on.  One bit of advice though, don’t get the white as it’s very hard to keep clean.

Ohh, and most important, it looks good!!!

1. Keo Look Cleat Protectors

Keo look cleat covers

Keo look cleat covers

These are so handy!! They slip nicely in your pocket; I’ve always used these since I can remember. The anti-slip material provides ample grip when walking in your cycling shoes and ensures you’re not ruining your cleats when you’re off the bike. Also, those nice wooden floors don’t get damaged and they are not so noisy when walking indoors. It’s also safer if you’re walking downstairs with that added grip and they’re easy to take on and off.

But don’t forget to take them off when you get back on your bike otherwise you won’t get in your pedals! I’ve forgotten a few times and it’s always when everyone else is shooting off down the road and you’re rushing to get them off and in your pocket.
