Why choose Lexham for 125cc bike insurance?

We've been insuring 125cc bikes since we started over 25 years ago. It's one of our core specialisms.

As a UK specialist broker with our own claims team, we understand what 125cc riders need - whether you've just passed your CBT or you're an experienced rider on a learner-legal bike.

What makes us different?

We're 125cc specialists

Unlike aggregators trying to quote on everything, we focus on what we do best. We have three dedicated schemes specifically for 125cc bikes, designed around the needs of this market. That means:

  • Our schemes are built for 125cc riders, not adapted from car insurance models.

  • We know the difference between a learner commuter and a delivery rider on a 125.

  • Our underwriter knows this market inside out.

Our own claims team

We work with our own dedicated claims handlers right here in our UK office, with claims administered on behalf of Lexham by Marble Arch. This means:

  • More flexibility. We assess your individual circumstances and riding history; we don't just tick boxes.

  • Direct relationship. Speak to the people who handle your claim.

  • Our team is here from start to finish.

We’re here when you need us

  • 24/7 claims serviced by Lancaster Gate Assistance

  • UK-based team available Mon-Fri 8.30am - 7pm, Sat 9.30am- 4.30pm

  • Live chat support for questions about your bike insurance

  • Manage your 125cc bike insurance policy online via our app or portal. You can make changes, report claims and renew your policy.

125cc Bike Insurance Cover Levels

To get the right policy for your 125cc, it's important to understand your cover options. Consider the level of cover for your needs.

Comprehensive

This is the most extensive level of 125cc bike insurance cover. Fully Comprehensive 125cc insurance includes:

  • Damage to your own vehicle and any third party from accidents – whether it's your fault or not

  • Fire damage, theft and compensation for your damaged bike (replacement only if less than 1 year old and policy terms apply)

As the name suggests, it's the most comprehensive cover for your vehicle.

Third party, fire and theft (TPFT)

This option covers you for:

  • Injury to other people, or damage to vehicles or property in the case of an accident

  • If your vehicle is stolen or damaged from an attempted theft

  • Fire damage

If you're responsible for an accident, third party fire and theft (TPFT) doesn't cover the cost of repairing your 125 bike.

Third party only (TPO)

This is the minimum legal cover in the UK. It covers you for:

  • Any damage you cause to someone else’s property or person.

  • It doesn't cover damage to your own moped or scooter or injury to yourself. It also won't cover the costs of replacing your vehicle if it's stolen, or fire damage.

We offer optional add-ons to enhance your 125cc motorbike, scooter or moped insurance policy. Discover more about upgrades and extras

How much does 125cc insurance cost?

Your bike insurance cost and premium depend on several factors. Understanding what affects these can help you find the most competitive insurance.

Your bike:

  • Make and model of your 125cc

  • Age and value

  • Any modifications to the bike

  • Security devices fitted

About you and your riding:

  • Your age and riding experience

  • Where you live and whether you can store the bike in a secure garage or premises

  • Your riding history (including past claims, convictions and any motorbike accident records)

  • Annual mileage and how you use the bike

  • Licence type (CBT, A1, A2, or full A licence)

We can assess your individual circumstances to offer competitive quotes. We work with you to find the best price without compromising on your 125cc insurance cover.

Understanding 125cc bike insurance

We understand taking out 125cc insurance can seem complicated, but we're here to help. Discover answers to some of our most-asked questions below.

If you want to know about...

The 125 insurance you need

Do you need 125cc insurance in the UK?

Yes, you do. It's against the law to ride on UK roads without at least third-party insurance, even if you've only got a provisional licence and CBT certificate.

While you're not required to carry your insurance documents with you constantly, you must provide them to a police officer upon request - either on the spot or within 7 days by presenting them at a police station.

It's also advisable to keep your driving licence with you.

What information do I need to hand to get 125cc insurance?

To get a quote for your 125cc, you'll need:

  • Your bike's registration number

  • The make and model

  • Your riding licence details (whether you've passed your CBT, and what type of licence you hold – A1, A2 or full A)

  • Your postcode

  • Your date of birth

  • Details of any previous claims, convictions or accidents in the last five years

  • Your no claims bonus (if you have one)

  • How you'll use the bike (social and commuting, business use, delivery, etc.)

  • Your estimated annual mileage

Don't worry if you haven't got all the details to hand – request a callback and we can help you through the quote.

What types of 125cc bikes does Lexham insure?

We insure 99% of 125cc bikes, including:

  • 125cc motorcycles (sports bikes, naked bikes, cruisers, adventure bikes)

  • 125cc scooters (automatic and manual)

  • 125cc mopeds

We cover all manufacturers equally - from premium Japanese and European brands to economical Chinese models.

We exclude some 125cc-equivalent electric bikes, but cover most electric models.

125cc insurance costs

How can I reduce my 125cc insurance cost?

There are a few things that can help bring down your premium:

  • Fitting additional insurance-approved trackers to your bike can provide discounts. Keep it in a locked garage or secure premises overnight if possible. Please note that mechanical locks are a policy requirement.

  • Your riding record makes a big difference. Accruing your no-claims bonus is the single most efficient way of building up discounts on your insurance quote. Try to avoid getting points on your licence or having accidents.

  • When setting up your policy, you could choose a higher voluntary excess to lower your insurance premium. However, take care to guarantee you would still be able to afford the excess should a claim arise – and that the value of this excess does not exceed the value of your vehicle. Be realistic about your annual mileage, too – estimating too high will increase your premium.

Request a callback and we can talk through more ways to lower your premium.

Why does bike style affect my 125cc insurance?

The style of your 125cc can have a big impact on your quote. A 125cc sports bike will typically cost significantly more to insure than a 125cc commuter or scooter, even though they're the same engine size.

Sports-styled 125s are seen as higher risk because of how they're typically ridden. Commuter bikes and scooters like the Honda CB125F or Yamaha NMAX 125 are often more competitively priced to insure.

Can I ride my 125cc on the motorway?

Not if you're a learner on a CBT. Learner riders with L-plates are not allowed on motorways.

Once you pass your test and get an A1, A2 or full A licence, you can ride your 125cc on motorways. However, with a top speed of around 65-70mph, you might find it more comfortable to stick to A-roads and smaller routes where your 125cc performs better.

What if my 125cc is modified?

You need to tell us about any modifications, both when you're getting a quote and any time you make changes during your policy. That includes things like exhaust systems, performance upgrades, custom paintwork, or any aftermarket parts. If you're in doubt, ask us.

Not all modifications are acceptable - particularly derestricted bikes. We'll look at each bike individually. Modifications may increase your premium, but we'll do what we can to find you the best cover.
