Before choosing your policy, it's worth understanding the three levels of cover available. We offer all three for learner riders. If you're unsure which is right for you, request a callback and we can talk you through your options.
This is the most extensive level of motorcycle insurance cover. Comprehensive motorbike insurance includes:
Damage to your own bike and any third party from accidents – whether it's your fault or not
Fire damage and theft
Compensation for your damaged vehicle (replacement only if less than 1 year old and policy terms apply).
As the name suggests, it's the most comprehensive cover for your vehicle.
This level of cover offers more protection than Third Party Only. It covers you for:
Injury to other people, or damage to vehicles or property in the case of an accident
Theft or attempted theft of your bike
Fire damage to your moped or scooter
If you're responsible for an accident, third party fire and theft (TPFT) doesn't cover the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle.
This is the minimum legal cover in the UK. It covers you for:
Any damage you cause to someone else’s property or person.
It doesn't cover damage to your own moped or scooter or injury to yourself. It also won't cover the costs of replacing your vehicle if it's stolen, or fire damage.
We offer optional add-ons to enhance your learner insurance policy. Discover more about upgrades and extras
Learner rider insurance costs vary based on several factors. Understanding what affects your premium can help you find a competitive rate.
Make, model and engine size (mopeds under 51cc with smaller engines are usually more competitive to insure than 125cc bikes)
Age and value of the bike
Security devices fitted (trackers can provide discounts)
Where you keep it overnight (storing in a secure garage or premises reduces premiums)
Your age (16-year-olds typically pay more as insurers see younger learner riders as higher risk)
Where you live (urban areas usually cost more)
Your riding history and no claims bonus (any accidents, convictions or penalty points)
How you'll use the bike (social use, commuting, or both)
Whether you've passed CBT or have a full licence
As a learner rider, insurers see you as higher risk because you lack riding experience. But at Lexham Insurance, we assess each learner individually to offer competitive quotes.

If you want to know about...
Yes, you do. It's a legal requirement to have at least third-party insurance before riding on UK roads.
To ride on the road as a learner, you must have insurance, a provisional licence, and have passed your CBT. You cannot legally ride without all three.
While you're not required to carry your insurance documents with you constantly, you must provide them to a police officer upon request - either on the spot or within 7 days by presenting them at a police station.
If you're caught riding without valid insurance, you could face a fine, penalty points on your licence, or even have your bike seized by the police.
To get motorcycle insurance quotes for learner cover, you'll need a few details including:
Your bike's registration number (or details of the bike you're planning to buy)
Your date of birth
Your postcode
Your CBT certificate details (date passed)
Your provisional licence details
How you'll use the bike (social riding, commuting to work/college, etc.)
Your estimated annual mileage
Where you'll keep the bike overnight
Details of any previous claims, convictions or accidents (even from driving a car)
Don't worry if you haven't got all this to hand - request a callback and we'll help you through it.
Yes, absolutely. We insure learner riders from 16 to 75 - whether you're a teenager on your first bike or an adult learning later in life.
If you're 16, you can ride a moped under 51cc after passing your CBT. Once you turn 17, you can ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc.
We understand that learner riders can struggle to find competitive insurance. That's why we've spent 25+ years building expertise in this area, with specialist schemes for learners of all ages.
If you're aged 16-25, you might also want to check out our young rider insurance page.
It depends on your age and the type of motorbike licence you hold.
If you're 16: After passing your CBT, you can ride a moped under 51cc with smaller engines and a maximum speed of 28mph. You must display L plates and can't carry passengers.
If you're 17 or over: After passing your Compulsory Basic Training, you can ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc with a power output of up to 11kW. You must display L plates and can't carry passengers or ride on motorways.
Your CBT certificate is valid for 2 years. If you haven't passed your practical test within that time, you'll need to retake it
We need you to own the bike (or be the registered keeper) to insure it. If you're buying a bike, you can get insurance set up to start from the day you pick it up.
If you're just researching prices before buying, request a callback and we can give you an idea of costs based on the bikes you're considering. This can help you budget and choose a bike that's competitive to insure.
Remember, you'll need a valid provisional licence and a CBT certificate to get insurance. If you want to understand costs before buying, we can talk you through quotes for different bikes you're considering.
If you want to know about...
Generally, yes - learner rider insurance tends to cost more than insurance for experienced riders. This is because insurers see learners as higher risk due to lack of riding experience.
At Lexham, we don't just see you as a statistic. We look at each learner rider individually, which is why some of our customers are surprised at how competitive our quotes are.
If you're aged 16-25, you might want to check our young rider insurance page for more tips on getting competitive rates.
As a learner, there are several things that can help reduce your premium:
Fitting additional insurance-approved trackers to your bike can provide discounts. Keep your bike in a secure garage or premises overnight if possible. Mechanical locks are a policy requirement.
Accruing your no claims bonus is the single most efficient way of building up discounts on your insurance quote. Avoid points on your licence.
You could choose a higher voluntary excess to lower your insurance premium. However, take care in ensuring you would still be able to afford the excess should a claim arise, and that the value of the excess does not exceed the value of your vehicle.
Request a callback and we can talk through more ways to lower your premium.
Unfortunately, no. Car insurance no claims bonus and motorcycle no claims bonus are kept on separate policies. You can't transfer one to the other.
However, some insurers (including us) may take your car insurance driving record into consideration when calculating your learner bike insurance quote - especially if you have a clean driving history.
Once you start riding, you'll begin building your motorcycle no claims bonus, which will help reduce your premiums year on year.
If you want to know about...
No. If you're riding as a learner with L plates, you're not legally allowed to carry passengers. This applies whether you're on a moped under 51cc or a 125cc motorcycle.
Once you've passed your full licence test, you can legally carry passengers – but you will need to add pillion cover to your insurance policy.
If you're just riding to and from one workplace or college, standard commuting cover is fine.
But if you're doing delivery work (food, parcels, etc.), you'll need specialist delivery rider insurance with Hire and Reward cover.
Request a callback if you're not sure what you need.
Your Compulsory Basic Training certificate is valid for 2 years. If you don't pass your practical test for a full licence within those 2 years, you'll need to retake your CBT to continue riding with L plates legally.
You should tell your insurer when you retake your CBT and update your policy with the new certificate details.
If your CBT expires and you don't retake it, you won't be legally allowed to ride - and your insurance won't be valid if you do.
Congratulations! Once you've passed your full motorcycle test and received your full licence, you need to let us know straight away so we can update your policy.
Passing your test is a change in circumstances that affects your insurance. Your premium might go down (because you're no longer a learner), but it depends on various factors including what licence you've passed (A1, A2 or full A) and whether you're planning to upgrade to a bigger bike.
You can update your details through the Lexham insurance app, on the Lexham Portal or by calling us.
