For many people, commuting via motorcycle or scooter is the best way to get to work. Whether you're navigating busy city streets or covering rural miles, your bike needs the right level of cover for daily work travel.
Unlike standard Social, Domestic and Pleasure (SD&P) insurance, commuter cover protects you when you're using your bike to travel to your place of work. At Lexham, we understand how important your bike is to your daily routine, and we're here to support you.
With over 25 years of experience, we've insured thousands of riders across urban and rural locations. We understand the challenges commuter riders face - from rush hour traffic to unpredictable weather.
Our in-house underwriting services mean we can offer you a quote tailored to your specific needs, whether you're commuting on a 125cc learner bike or a larger capacity motorcycle.
We work with our own dedicated claims handlers right here in our UK office, with claims administered on behalf of Lexham by Marble Arch. This means:

Before choosing your policy, it's worth understanding the three levels of cover available. We offer all three for commuter motorcycle and scooter riders. If you're unsure which is right for you, request a callback and we can talk you through your options.
This is the most extensive level of motorcycle insurance cover. Comprehensive motorbike insurance includes:
Damage to your own bike and any third party from accidents – whether it's your fault or not
Fire damage and theft
Compensation for your damaged vehicle (replacement only if less than 1 year old and policy terms apply)
As the name suggests, it's the most comprehensive cover for your vehicle.
This level of cover offers more protection than Third Party Only. It covers you for:
Injury to other people, or damage to vehicles or property in the case of an accident
Theft or attempted theft of your bike
Fire damage to your motorcycle or scooter
If you're responsible for an accident, third party fire and theft (TPFT) doesn't cover the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle.
This is the minimum legal cover in the UK. It covers you for:
Any damage you cause to someone else’s property or person.
It doesn't cover damage to your own moped or scooter or injury to yourself. It also won't cover the costs of replacing your vehicle if it's stolen, or fire damage.
We offer optional add-ons to enhance your commuter insurance policy. Discover more about upgrades and extras
Commuter motorcycle insurance costs vary based on several factors. Understanding what affects your premium can help you find a competitive rate.
Make, model and engine size
Age and value of the bike
Security devices fitted (trackers can provide discounts)
Where you keep it overnight (storing in a secure garage or premises reduces premiums)
Your age and experience
Where you live (urban areas usually cost more)
Your riding history and no claims bonus (any accidents, convictions or penalty points)
Your estimated annual mileage for commuting
Whether you have a full licence or are riding on a CBT
As a bike used for commuting covers more miles and has regular road exposure, insurers will see it as a higher risk compared to purely social use. However, at Lexham Insurance, we assess each commuter individually to offer competitive quotes.

If you want to know about...
Yes. If you're using your motorcycle or scooter to travel to your place of work, you need insurance that includes commuting use.
Standard Social, Domestic and Pleasure (SD&P) insurance does not cover commuting. If you don't have the right level of cover and you're involved in an accident while commuting, your claim could be rejected and your policy could be voided.
At Lexham, we make it straightforward to get the right cover for daily work travel. Commuter insurance also covers you for social, domestic and pleasure use when you're not riding to work.
To get motorcycle insurance quotes for commuter cover, you'll need a few details including:
Your bike's registration number
Your date of birth
Your postcode
Your licence details (whether you have a full licence or CBT)
How you'll use the bike (commuting to one place of work, plus any social use)
Your estimated annual mileage
Where you'll keep the bike overnight
Details of any previous claims, convictions or accidents
How many years no claims bonus you have
Don't worry if you haven't got all this to hand - request a callback and we'll help you through it.
We insure commuter riders on motorcycles and scooters of various engine sizes, from 125cc learner bikes to larger capacity machines.
Whether you commute on a small city scooter, a mid-capacity naked bike, or something larger, our specialist team will endeavour to find you the right cover.
Yes, absolutely. Commuter insurance covers you for:
Riding to and from your place of work
Social, Domestic and Pleasure (SD&P) use - riding for leisure, visiting friends, shopping, etc.
You're covered for all of these uses under one policy. You don't need to choose between commuting-only or social-only cover.
If you use your bike for any delivery work (food, parcels, courier), you'll need our specialist Delivery Rider Insurance instead of commuter insurance.
Delivery rider insurance includes commuting and social use, so you'll still be covered for riding to work and leisure use.
Even if you only use your bike to commute once, you need commuter insurance. Any use of your bike to travel to work requires commuting cover.
If you only occasionally ride to work and mostly use your bike for leisure, you still need to declare commuting use. Don't risk riding without the right cover - if you're in doubt about what you need, request a callback and we'll talk you through it.
If you want to know about...
A bike used for commuting covers more miles and has regular road exposure during peak traffic times so, insurers see it as higher risk compared to bikes only used occasionally for leisure.
However, at Lexham, we don't just see you as a statistic. We assess each commuter rider individually, which is why some of our customers are surprised at how competitive our quotes are.
As a commuter rider, there are several things that could help reduce your premium:
Fitting additional insurance-approved trackers to your bike can provide discounts. Keep your bike in a secure garage or premises overnight if possible. mechanical locks are a policy requirement.
Accruing your no claims bonus is the single most efficient way of building up discounts on your insurance quote. Avoid points on your licence.
You could choose a higher voluntary excess to lower your insurance premium. However, take care in ensuring you would still be able to afford the excess should a claim arise, and that the value of the excess does not exceed the value of your vehicle.
Request a callback and we can talk through more ways to lower your premium.
