Adventure Motorcycle Insurance Cover Levels

To get the right policy for your adventure bike, it's important to understand your cover options. Consider the level of cover for your needs.

Comprehensive

This is the most extensive level of adventure motorcycle insurance cover. Fully comprehensive motorcycle insurance includes:

  • Damage to your own bike and any third party from accidents – whether it's your fault or not

  • Fire damage, theft and compensation for your damaged bike (replacement only if less than 1 year old and policy terms apply)

As the name suggests, it's the most comprehensive cover for your vehicle.

Third party, fire and theft (TPFT)

This option covers you for:

  • Injury to other people, or damage to vehicles or property in the case of an accident

  • If your adventure bike is stolen or damaged from an attempted theft

  • Fire damage

If you're responsible for an accident, third party fire and theft (TPFT) doesn't cover the cost of repairing your adventure motorcycle.

Third party only (TPO)

This is the minimum legal cover in the UK. It covers you for:

  • Any damage you cause to someone else’s property or person.

  • It doesn't cover damage to your own moped or scooter or injury to yourself. It also won't cover the costs of replacing your vehicle if it's stolen, or fire damage.

We offer optional add-ons to enhance your adventure motorbike insurance policy. Discover more about upgrades and extras

How much does adventure bike insurance cost?

Your adventure motorcycle insurance cost and insurance premium depend on several factors. Understanding what affects these can help you find the most competitive insurance.

Your bike:

  • Make, model and engine size of your adventure bike

  • Age and value

  • Any modifications to the bike

  • Security devices fitted (trackers can provide discounts)

  • Touring equipment and accessories fitted (panniers, luggage systems, GPS mounts)

About you and your riding:

  • Your age and riding experience

  • Where you live and whether you can store the bike in a secure garage or premises

  • Your riding history (including past claims, convictions and any accident records)

  • Annual mileage and how you use the bike

We can assess your individual circumstances to offer competitive quotes. We recognise that adventure riders often cover higher annual mileage for touring and exploration, and we can accommodate this. We work with you to find the best price without compromising on your cover.

Adventure bike usage and cover

Adventure motorcycles are built for versatility, and your insurance should reflect that.

What riding does your policy cover?

Our adventure bike insurance covers:

  • Daily commuting to work or college

  • Long-distance touring across the UK

  • Green lane riding (as these are public roads)

  • Social, domestic and pleasure use

Important: We cover accident damage that occurs on public roads, including green lanes. We would not cover accident damage that occurs away from a road (such as at off-road parks or private land).

International touring cover

Most of our adventure bike policies include European cover as standard:

  • Up to 90 days per year

  • Maximum of 30 days per single trip

  • EU countries only

Before you head off on a European adventure, check your policy documents to confirm which countries you're covered in and what level of cover applies when you're abroad, as it might be different to what you've got in the UK.

Note: We don't currently offer cover for trips outside Europe (such as Morocco or other North African destinations).

Touring equipment and accessories

We understand that adventure riders invest in quality touring equipment. Panniers and luggage systems are covered as accessories on your policy.

Please note that personal effects (camping gear, clothing, cameras) would not be covered under your motorcycle insurance. You may wish to consider separate travel insurance for these items on longer tours.

Whatever make or model you ride, our specialist team has the expertise to find you the right cover. If you're not sure whether your adventure bike is covered, request a callback and we'll confirm.

Understanding adventure motorcycle insurance

We understand taking out adventure bike insurance can seem complicated, but we're here to help. Discover answers to some of our most-asked questions below.

If you want to know about...

The adventure motorcycle insurance you need

What makes adventure bike insurance different from standard motorcycle insurance?

Fundamentally, adventure bike insurance uses the same principles as other motorcycle insurance. However, there are some practical differences:

Higher mileage: Adventure riders often cover significantly more miles than other motorcyclists due to touring and exploration. We understand this and can accommodate higher annual mileage where needed.

Dual-purpose use: Your adventure bike might be used for commuting on Monday and green lane exploration on Saturday. We recognise this versatility.

Touring equipment: Adventure bikes are often equipped with expensive panniers, luggage systems and GPS units, which are covered as accessories on your policy.

Green lane riding: We cover green lane riding as these are public roads. Please note we would not cover accident damage that occurs away from a road (such as at off-road parks or on private land).

What information do I need to hand for adventure bike insurance?

To get a quote, you'll need:

  • Your bike's registration number

  • The make and model

  • Your riding licence details (what type of licence you hold – A1, A2 or full A)

  • Your postcode

  • Your date of birth

  • Details of any previous claims, convictions or accidents in the last five years

  • Your no claims bonus (if you have one)

  • How you'll use the bike (commuting, touring, social riding)

  • Your estimated annual mileage

  • Details of any modifications or touring equipment fitted

Don't worry if you haven't got all the details to hand – request a callback and we can help you through the quote.

Does my adventure bike insurance cover off-road riding?

It depends what you mean by "off-road."

Green lanes (legal rights of way): Yes, these are covered because they're legally classed as public roads, even though they're unsurfaced.

Off-road parks, pay-and-play sites, or private land: No, we would not cover accident damage that occurs away from a public road.

If you're planning to do regular off-road riding at dedicated venues or on private land, you may need separate off-road insurance. Request a callback if you'd like to discuss your specific riding plans.

Adventure motorbike insurance costs

How can I reduce my adventure motorbike insurance cost?

There are a few things that can help bring down your premium:

  • Fitting additional insurance-approved trackers to your adventure bike can provide discounts. Keep it in a locked garage or secure premises overnight if possible. Please note that mechanical locks are a policy requirement.

  • Your riding record makes a big difference. Accruing your no-claims bonus is the single most efficient way of building up discounts on your insurance quote. Try to avoid getting points on your licence or having accidents.

  • When setting up your policy, you could choose a higher voluntary excess to lower your insurance premium. However, take care to guarantee you would still be able to afford the excess should a claim arise – and that the value of this excess does not exceed the value of your vehicle. Be realistic about your annual mileage, too – estimating too high will increase your premium.

Request a callback and we can talk through more ways to lower your premium.

Do I need more cover because I do high mileage touring?

Not necessarily more cover, but you do need to make sure your annual mileage is accurate on your policy.

Many adventure riders cover 10,000-15,000+ miles per year, especially if they tour regularly or use their bike for daily commuting. This is absolutely fine – we can accommodate high mileage riders.

The important thing is being honest about your expected mileage when you get your quote. If you underestimate and then need to make a claim, your policy might not be valid.

If your riding patterns change during the year (for example, you decide to do a month-long European tour), contact us and we can update your policy.

If you want to know about...

More adventure motorbike insurance needs

Can I take my adventure bike abroad for touring?

Most of our policies include European cover for up to 90 days a year, with a maximum of 30 consecutive days in one trip.

Before you head off, check your policy documents to see:

  • Which EU countries you're covered in

  • How many days you've got remaining for the year

  • What level of cover applies when you're abroad (it might be different to what you have in the UK)

Important: We don't currently offer cover for trips outside Europe.

If you need to extend your European cover or have questions about touring abroad, request a callback before you go.

What if my adventure bike is modified?

You need to tell us about any modifications, both when you're getting a quote and any time you make changes during your policy.

For adventure bikes, common modifications include:

  • Aftermarket exhausts

  • Crash bars and engine protection

  • Upgraded suspension

  • Auxiliary lighting

  • Heated grips

  • Custom seats

  • Luggage rack modifications

If you're in doubt about whether something counts as a modification, ask us. It's always better to declare something that turns out not to matter than to not declare something that should have been.

Modifications will usually increase your premium, but we'll do what we can to find you the best cover.

Do I need to tell you about panniers and luggage systems?

Yes, please let us know about any permanent or semi-permanent touring equipment fitted to your adventure bike.

This includes:

  • Pannier frames and cases (hard or soft)

  • Top boxes

  • Tank bags (if permanently mounted)

  • Auxiliary fuel tanks

  • GPS mounting systems

  • Additional lighting

These accessories are covered as part of your policy, but we need to know they're fitted so they're included in your insured value.
