Zero Motorcycle Insurance Cover Levels

To get the right policy for your Zero motorcycle, it's important to understand your cover options.

Comprehensive

This is the most extensive level of Zero motorcycle insurance cover. Fully Comprehensive motorcycle insurance includes:

  • Damage to your own bike and any third party from accidents – whether it's your fault or not.

  • Any damage caused by fire or attempted theft (replacement only if less than 1 year old and policy terms apply).

As the name suggests, it is the most comprehensive cover available for your Zero motorcycle or scooter.

Third party, fire and theft (TPFT)

This option covers you for:

  • Injury to other people, or damage to third-party vehicles and property in the case of an accident

  • If your Zero is stolen or damaged in an attempted theft

  • Fire damage

If you're responsible for an accident, third-party fire and theft (TPFT) doesn't cover the loss or cost of repairing your Zero motorcycle or scooter.

Third party only (TPO)

The minimum legal requirement for riding on UK roads. This covers:

  • Injury or damage caused to other people or their property.

  • It does not cover damage to your own motorcycle, theft, or fire damage.

You can also choose from a range of optional upgrades and add-ons to enhance your Zero Motorcycle or Scooter insurance policy. Discover more about upgrades and extras. Discover more about upgrades and extras

A Brief History of Zero Motorcycles

Zero Motorcycles was founded in California in 2006 by former aerospace engineer Neal Saiki. Originally operating under the name Electricross, the company focused on developing lightweight electric off-road motorcycles before expanding into models built for the road.

Over the next few years, Zero has become one of the world’s leading electric motorcycle manufacturers, helping to shape the electric bike market through advancements in battery development, range, and performance.

Today, Zero’s lineup includes everything from urban commuters and naked roadsters all the way to adventure and touring motorcycles - and now an electric scooter too!

Understanding zero motorcycle & scooter insurance

We understand taking out insurance for your Zero Motorcycle & Scooter Insurance can seem complicated, but we're here to help. Discover answers to some of our most-asked questions below.

If you want to know about...

The Zero Motorcycles Insurance you need

Do you need insurance for a Zero Motorcycle or Scooter?

Yes, you do. It's against the law to ride on UK roads without at least third-party insurance, even if you've only got a provisional licence.

While you're not required to carry your insurance documents with you constantly, you must provide them to a police officer upon request - either on the spot or within 7 days by presenting them at a police station.

It is also recommended that you keep your licence with you too.

What information do I need to hand for Zero insurance?

To get a quote, you'll need:

  • Your Zero Motorcycles registration number

  • The make and model (e.g, DSR/X, FXE, SR/S)

  • Your riding licence details (whether you've passed your CBT, and what type of licence you hold – A1, A2 or full A)

  • Your postcode

  • Your date of birth

  • Details of any previous claims, convictions, or accidents in the last five years

  • Your no-claims bonus (if you have one)

  • How you intend to use your bike (social and commuting, business use, delivery, etc.)

  • Your estimated annual mileage

Does Lexham insure all Zero models?

Yes, we insure most Zero Motorcycle models, from lightweight urban-focused bikes through to the premium touring and adventure style motorcycles.

We are particularly experienced with popular models such as the Zero S, SR, SR/F, FXE & DSR/X.

As specialist motorcycle insurance brokers, we understand the growing popularity of electric motorcycles and can help find competitive cover for riders using their Zero for commuting, leisure riding, touring, and everyday transport.

Can I get immediate cover for my Zero Motorcycle or Scooter?

Yes. Immediate quotes and cover are available for most Zero models, provided the risk falls within our underwriting appetite.

If your specific Zero model or circumstances require additional review, we'll let you know during the quote process.

If you want to know about...

More about your Zero Motorcycles insurance

What if my Zero Motorcycle or Scooter is modified?

You must tell us about any modifications, both when you're getting a quote and whenever you make changes to your policy. That includes performance upgrades, custom paintwork, and any aftermarket parts. If you're in doubt, ask us.

We'll look at each Zero model individually. Modifications will usually increase your premium, but we'll do what we can to find you competitive cover.

Can I ride my Zero Motorcycle or Scooter abroad?

Most of our policies include European cover for up to 90 days a year, with a maximum of 30 days in one go.

Before you head off, check your policy documents to see which countries you're covered in, how many days you've got, and what level of cover applies when you're abroad, as it might be different from what you've got in the UK.

If you need to extend your cover or you're going somewhere that's not included, get in contact with us before you go, or manage your policy on the Lexham Insurance App or through the Lexham Portal on our website.

Can I carry a passenger on my Zero Motorcycle?

You can if you've got the right licence for it. When you're getting a quote, we'll ask if you want pillion cover, and we can add that to your policy.

Check your documents to make sure it's included. If you haven't got pillion cover but need to add it, get in contact with us, or adjust your policy on the Lexham Insurance App or through the Lexham Portal on our website.

If you want to know about...

Zero Motorcycles insurance costs

How can I reduce my Zero Motorcycles insurance cost?

There are a few things that can help bring down your premium:

  • Fitting additional insurance-approved trackers to your Zero can provide discounts. Keep it in a locked garage or secure premises overnight if possible. Please note that mechanical locks may be a requirement on your policy. Please consult your policy wording for the full details.

  • Your riding record makes a big difference. Accruing your no-claims bonus is the single most efficient way of building up discounts on your insurance quote. Try to avoid getting points on your licence or having accidents.

  • When setting up your policy, you could choose a higher voluntary excess to lower your insurance premium. However, take care to guarantee you would still be able to afford the excess should a claim arise – and that the value of this excess does not exceed the value of your Honda. Be realistic about your annual mileage, too – estimating too high will increase your premium.

Is Zero motorcycle insurance expensive?

It depends on the model you ride and your individual circumstances. Entry-level and urban-focused models, such as the Zero S or FXE, can often be more affordable to insure than higher-value performance and touring models.

Premium motorcycles such as the SR/S, SR/F, and DSR/X may attract higher premiums due to their value, performance capabilities, and repair costs.

Factors that can affect your premium include your age, riding experience, location, annual mileage, where the motorcycle is stored, and the specific Zero model you own.

At Lexham, we assess each case individually to help find competitive cover tailored to your circumstances.

If you want to know about...

You can reach us Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 7pm, and Saturday, 9.30am to 4.30pm.

What is Lexham’s claims line availability?
