About Yamaha

In 1887 Torakusu Yamaha started to make Reed Organs. His success led him to receive many orders and set up Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd. The company then started to produce pianos and using its woodwork expertise a range of Furniture.

In fact the Japanese company now known as The Yamaha Corporation has grown to become the world's largest manufacturer of a full line of musical instruments, a leading producer of audio/visual products, semiconductors and other computer related products, sporting goods, home appliances and furniture, specialty metals, machine tools, and industrial robots.

In 1953 they began to investigate overseas markets and as they were experts in metallurgical technologies (producing metals!) this lead to The Yamaha Motor Corporation, Ltd. being set up the following year.

The first Motorcycle produced was a YA-1 was a simple 125cc single-cylinder two-stroke. By 1970 the number of models had expanded to 20 ranging from 50cc to 350cc, with production of over 1/2 a million machines per year, 60% of which were for export. In 1973 production topped 1 million motorcycles per year.

The Yamaha Motor Corporation is now the second largest manufacturer of motorcycles in the world.
