Second Leg 19th & 20th Sept 2015 Rebrechien, France:

On Friday 18th September we set off for the 2nd leg of the European cup. We had a slightly depleted team for this tournament as some of our younger members had to return to university or college. Therefore it fell to the old guard to defend our current ranking of third place following the first leg of the tournament. The team consisted of Dave, Martin, Andrew, myself (Mark) and Sam the youngest member of the team who brought copious amounts of energy and stamina to the side.

This tournament was arranged slightly differently to the normal format whereby the eight competing teams were split into two groups of four with the winners of each group playing for 1st place, the runners up of each group playing for third place and so on. Unfortunately for us our very first game was against the current European champions, Pedales Varengevillaises A. This team is based in Le Harve and to date we have never beaten them. However we started the game well and had an equal amount of chances on goal. All was going well and by half time neither team had scored. This pretty much became the pattern for the whole of the second half. We were approaching the final whistle with five seconds to spare when unfortunately they broke past our defence and scored.

The next game we managed to win 1 – 0 against ESGL, a team from Paris, followed by a 3-0 win in our third game against Ile De France, another team based in Paris. We finished the day second in our group with high hopes for a third place on Sunday. The following day we had our third place play off match against the runners up of the other group, Pedales Varengevillaises B. This was a very closely fought battle and we had by far the most shots on goal but unfortunately could not make them count. The final score was 3-2 against us. This result left us in fourth place.

The final standings:

  • 1. Pedales Varengevillaises A
  • 2. Frileuse Sanvic
  • 3. Pedales Varengevillaises B
  • 4. Oakenden
  • 5. ESGL
  • 6. PAC “95”
  • 7. Rebrechien
  • 8. Ile de France

The final leg is being played in Le Harve on the 3rd & 4th October. Hopefully we can regain our third place in the overall standings.
